Building a Custom Schema Provider

CodeSmith Generator looks for schema providers in the SchemaProviders folder of its installation folder. If you build your project straight into that folder, Generator picks up your changes each time it starts.

To set the output path:

In Solution Explorer, right-click the project and select Properties.
Select the Build page, and set Configuration to All Configurations.
Set Output path to the SchemaProviders folder of the Generator installation folder, for example C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeSmith\v8.5\SchemaProviders. Use the Browse button to make sure you pick the right folder.

Important

The installation folder is under Program Files, so you need to run Visual Studio as an administrator to build into it.
Close Generator before you build. While it's running, it keeps your schema provider's assembly loaded, and the build can't overwrite it.
