If you like ELMAH, you are going to love CodeSmith Insight.

We at CodeSmith Tools really liked ELMAH, "an application-wide error logging facility that is completely pluggable." However, ELMAH only works with ASP.NET, and we needed more. That is why we created CodeSmith Insight. CodeSmith Insight offers, quite literally, a super set of ELMAH's features. Below is a list of key features that Insight expands upon.

  • More supported platforms: ASP.NET, MVC3, WinForms, WPF, Silverlight - Insight offers client assemblies that integrate with almost any .NET application. Just drop in the assembly, add a few short lines of configuration, and all your different applications can start reporting to a single repository.
  • More than a log: Errors are organized, stacked, and searchable - Sifting through an error log can be a daunting task, but Insight keeps things clean by automatically stacking duplicate exceptions, as well as making all reports both searchable and sortable.
  • Proactively fix your most common issues - Since Insight is more than just a log, you can easily see which issues your end users are experiencing most and get them corrected proactively.
  • More exception details: Simple API to add information to any error report - By default, Insight reports more information than ELMAH, and it's API makes it easy to add additional information to any report. This can include tags, in memory objects, and file attachments.
  • Remotely turn errors and information on or off without having to redeploy - Updating a web.config is usually easy, but what about deployed applications? Insight allows for simple and remote configuration of all applications reporting to it.
  • Ability to communicate with users and turn a bad situation into a good one - Insight adds mailbox integration to your error reporting service, making it easy to stay in touch with your end users, and allows you to ask them questions as well as keep them up to date.
